Anthony Marwood Prepares to Sell his Soul to the Devil
Academy of St Martin in the Fields to tour Stravinsky's 'The Soldier's Tale'

November 02, 2007 - Press Dispensary - Between 16 November and 1 December, 2007, the world-renowned Academy of St Martin in the Fields, in collaboration with Oliver Award-nominated choreographer/director, Lawrence Evans, will be reviving Stravinsky's 'The Solider's Tale' - a remarkable mix of drama, dance, film and physical theatre.

Set towards the end of the World War One, 'The Soldier's Tale' tells the story of a violin-playing soldier who is cruelly tricked into selling his soul to the devil as he returns home on leave. Traditionally played by an actor who mimes the notoriously tricky violin part, the role of the soldier will be performed and played by internationally acclaimed award-winning British violinist, Anthony Marwood. The inclusion of British trumpeter, Alison Balsom, in the ensemble will further enhance this extraordinary staging which played to national acclaim in 2005.

The Daily Telegraph said of the production (7 July, 2005): "...the succinct and brilliantly imaginative staging that Lawrence Evans has created for it is entirely faithful to the spirit in which the music and mise-en-scene were conceived... It was a gem of inspiration and thorough preparation... This was a true ensemble collaboration, disquieting and exhilarating in equal measure, and executed with excellence, economy and élan."

The Financial Times (6 July, 2005) said: " ...The show breathes creative energy, no more so than in Anthony Marwood’s acting / musicking of the central role."

The Independent (6 July, 2005) said: " ...The Soldier’s Tale... packs a tremendous punch."
